Take out the Bacteria Test vial and set it upright on a flat surface.
Collect a water sample. If you are using tap water, you may want to run the water in a slow stream.
Carefully twist off the cap and fill the vial to 1/2" below the top (to 5 ml line). Do not overfill or spill the bacterial growth powder in the vial.
Replace the cap and twist on tightly. Shake the vial vigorously for 20 seconds.
Place the capped vial upright in a warm area (70-90°F) where the vial will not be disturbed for 48 hours.
After 48 hours, check the color of the sample without opening the vial. If the result is negative, the sample will turn purple. If the result is positive, the sample will turn yellow.
For positive results, add bleach to the sample before pouring it into the toilet. Negative samples may be poured directly into the toilet. Discard the used vial in the trash.
