String-Wound Filter Cartridges

Explore All Filters’ range of string-wound filters that deliver reliable, high-capacity water filtration for various types of systems. Polypropylene (PP) string-wound filter cartridges are produced by tightly winding fibers around a core, providing depth filtration that effectively captures sediment, increases filter lifespan, and protects plumbing. These string wound water filter replacements are available in various sizes and micron ratings and are ideal for whole-house systems, well water, irrigation, and reverse osmosis (RO) pre-filters.

How to Match Your Filter

We carry filters that are compatible with almost any setup, from under-sink filters to whole-house and commercial systems. Our sediment filter cross-reference chart makes it easy to find string-wound filter cartridges for your specific system. The chart is organized by filter size, micron ratings, and series, making it easy to find a filter compatible with your system. Simply follow this procedure:

  1. Check the size of your current cartridge (e.g., 2.5” x 10” or 4.5” x 20”)
  2. Match the micron rating printed on your filter (e.g., 5, 10, or 30 microns)
  3. Check the series that corresponds with your filter (e.g., CW or WP Series)
  4. Match your current number with the SpiroPure equivalent (e.g., the Hydronix SWC-25-10-0.5 is the equivalent of the SpiroPure SP-CW0.5 in the first row)

FAQs on String Wound Filter

Are string wound water filters better than pleated filters?

String-wound filters are more affordable, but require more frequent replacement and maintenance than pleated cartridges. String-wound is a great choice for well water applications and applications with high amounts of large dirt and sand. Overall, they offer a lower flow rate, but efficiently remove large particles at a lower cost.
String-wound filters are filters with a cord, in our case polypropylene cord, wrapped around a center core. They use depth-filtration, capturing sediment particles between the cord layers. They make for an economical option for capturing large dirt and sand particulates in water.
How often you replace your string wound sediment filter depends upon water quality, usage, micron rating, water temperature and pressure, and more. In general, you should replace your cartridge about every 2-6 months. If you notice a decrease in pressure and water flow, it is time to replace.
String-wound filters are made to reduce sediment particles from water like dirt, sand, and rust. They are commonly used as pre-filters, such as for whole house systems, well water applications, RO and other under sink systems, and commercial applications like food and beverage processing.
The rating you need depends upon the needed degree of filtration, desired flow rate, water quality, and more. The lower the micron rating, the finer the filtration. For most whole house applications, 10-25 microns is sufficient. If a better flow rate is required over finer filtration, 50 microns or more may be best.
